SILK
There are two types of silk: cultured silk, produced by butterflies and wild silk, produced by caterpillars.
Each year, nearly 600,000 tons of silk are produced, 70% of which is in China.
Silk is one of the first textiles used.
IS IT ECO-RESPONSIBLE?
Silk is a natural, biodegradable and renewable material. This could make it an environmentally friendly material. However, its cultivation is intensive and involves the use of chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers, which are harmful to the planet.
WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES?
You don't have to give up on silk. Finding out how it is produced before buying allows you to avoid paying producers who do not respect the environment or animals.
Silk can, however, be replaced by Lyocell. This is an ecological artificial fabric made from wood bark and manufactured in Europe.
